PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
- The diaphragm in a scuba diving second stage.
- The diaphragm in scuba diving second stage is a flexible rubber membrane that is used to sense ambient pressure and regulate airflow. It is located in the pressure chamber of the second stage, with one side exposed to seawater and the other side connected to the mouthpiece.
- When a diver is underwater, water pressure acts on one side of the diaphragm. As the depth of water increases, so does the water pressure. The diaphragm moves up and down in response to changes in water pressure.
- When the diaphragm moves upward, it compresses the air in the pressure chamber. The compressed air flows out of the mouthpiece for the diver to breathe.
- When the diaphragm moves downward, it expands the pressure chamber. The volume of the pressure chamber increases and the pressure decreases. The reduced pressure draws new air from the first stage to replenish the pressure chamber.
